Australorps
Touted as the best option for anyone venturing into profitable backyard farming, the Australorp is a leader in egg and meat production. Our birds are bred to the standards set forth by The Australorp Club of Australia. As such, we have both black and blue Australorps (black is the only color recognized in the United States).
About The Breed
Australorps are large, heavy birds featuring close-fitting, soft feathers that tend to show subtle hints of green and purple when lit by the sun. With an upright stance, they carry their tails high. Their breasts are full and well-rounded, while their combs, earlobes, and wattles are all red in color. The standard-sized Australorps are pretty heavy, with males weighing 8.5 to 10lb, while the hens weigh 6.5 to 8lb.
Eggs
Australorps typically begin laying around 6 months of age. Once they start, you can expect around 250 beautiful, medium to large, light brown eggs per year. At around age four, you may notice that your hens are laying fewer eggs.
Temperament
Australorps are generally known for being friendly, calm, and human-friendly birds, making them a great addition to any backyard flock. Because they are a quiet and calm, they may get bullied by more aggressive breeds.
Reproduction
Australorp chicks typically hatch after 21 days of incubation.
Life Expectancy
The average Australorp has a life span of approximately 6-10 years.
